Intern, Energy and Environmental Affairs

The National Bureau of Asian Research (NBR) is seeking an Intern, Energy and Environmental Affairs to support various energy and environmental programs, such as the Pacific Energy Summit and the Energy Security Program and assist with NBR's work on nontraditional security challenges and climate resiliency. This opportunity allows for the individual to develop skills in research, event planning, publications, and general office and project support through on-the-job experience.

This is a paid, full-time (40 hours/week), hourly, non-exempt, temporary position, September 2022 - February 2023, based in NBR's Washington, D.C. office. This internship is supervised by the Project Manager, Energy and Environmental Affairs.


  • Research Support: Providing substantive research assistance for project teams and scholars, including gathering articles on current events and background on key individuals, attending and summarizing local events on trade and energy, and conducting an interview with an expert in the energy and environmental programming field.
  • Database Administration: Maintaining and updating project databases; data entry and research for institutional and project databases.
  • Publications Support: Reviewing, fact-checking, proofreading, and formatting publications; assisting with publications distribution (including mailings), etc.
  • Project Assistance: Drafting, reviewing, fact-checking, proofreading, and formatting documents related to NBR's energy and environmental programming, including but not limited to briefing materials, agendas, website content, key thematic issues, and related publications and/or other materials as appropriate.
  • Other: Participating in and supporting other NBR activities as needed.


  • Current student or degree holder in Asia Studies, International Relations, Environmental Policy, International Political Economy, or a related field.
  • The ideal applicant should be a motivated self-starter who can work independently or as part of a team; pay acute attention to detail; be organized; work well under pressure; and have excellent written, oral, and research skills.
  • Some professional experience with research, writing, event planning, or other responsibilities listed above preferred but not required.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in a relevant geographical or topical area of Asia studies and/or U.S.-Asia policy; reading proficiency in an Asian language preferred.
